PRESS RELEASE

NEW YORK – Dec. 6, 2023 – APOLAN, the non-profit organization driving global adoption and evolution of optical networks, recently released a trio of projects demonstrating the sustainability benefits of optical local area network (OLAN) technology.

The latest issue of ICT Today magazine features an article by longtime APOLAN leaders Gayla Arrindell, John Hoover and Jeff Van Horne focusing on building greener high-performance networks.
“How Optical LANs Can Support Sustainability in the Digital Era” addresses how commercial buildings can leverage optical LAN technology to build greener networks while meeting evolving technology requirements.

“Many building professionals are looking to OLAN technology, including point-to-point and point-to-multipoint topologies, to help achieve ESG goals and reduce carbon emissions while lowering costs,” the article explains. “OLAN can reduce energy consumption, support efficient power delivery over greater distances, reduce space and material, and provide overall operational and capital savings in various environments, applications and deployments.”

APOLAN also recently presented the “Optical LAN, Smart Buildings & Internet of Things” webinar
, now available on demand, that explores how designs promoting fiber optic cabling can elevate the performance of smart buildings’ Internet of Things networks. Optical LANs can streamline operations for IT professionals, strengthen
network security and exceed connectivity density and bandwidth demand. In addition, they enable healthier buildings that contribute to carbon reduction sustainability initiatives.

Lastly, APOLAN published its newest white paper, “Optical LAN Advances Smart Building Internet of Things’ Scalability, Security and Sustainability.”
This white paper examines the multifaceted advantages that optical LANs bring to the forefront of modernizing networks through advancements in scalability, security and sustainability.

“By harnessing fiber-forward technology, centralized intelligence through software-defined management, and innovative powering methods, OLANs redefine how smart buildings optimize their high-density wired and wireless connectivity, fortify their defenses and embrace eco-consciousness,” the white paper explains.

The transformative potential of Optical LANs cannot be overstated. As we stand at the crossroads of technology and sustainability, OLANs offer a blueprint for harmonizing the digital and physical plus wired and wireless realms, steering smart buildings and campuses toward a future that is smarter, greener, and more secure.

To view APOLAN’s sustainability resources and many other articles, white papers, case studies and videos demonstrating the benefits of OLANs, visit apolanglobal.org.

Explore the Advantages of Passive Optical LAN at APOLAN's November Webinar

Passive optical LAN offers a bandwidth-efficient LAN architecture with measurable CapEx and OpEx savings over traditional copper LAN. Join APOLAN for the Passive Optical LAN 101 webinar on Nov. 9, 2023, at 12 noon EST to examine the differences between conventional copper LAN and passive optical LAN, including substantially lower power consumption, reduced costs, environmental benefits and future-proof technology. Registration cost: included with APOLAN membership or $99 per nonmember registrant.

Learning objectives:

Understand the differences between a traditional copper LAN environment and a passive optical LAN environment.

Learn how to reduce costs in design, the construction process, and end-user maintenance and future additions.

Identify the components and environments of passive optical LAN that far exceed outdated legacy copper networks.

Examine how passive optical LAN uses less equipment, resulting in less raw material, garbage and transportation, and potentially qualifying for LEED/HSW credit.

Global Markets Report Highlights Optical LAN’s Market Growth

PRESS RELEASE

NEW YORK – May 1, 2023 — APOLAN, the non-profit organization advocating for the education and global adoption for Optical Local Area Networks, today announced findings from the Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA) Optical LAN Global Markets Report. The research, commissioned by APOLAN, examines Optical LAN market forecasts by region, verticals, project size, type and application, and system components/powering options.

“Our latest report provides an external and independent view of the Optical LAN market and details its expansion in recent years,” said Martin Chiesa, BSRIA Senior Consultant. “We are witnessing growth coming from several market segments that previously were not as relevant as they are now. This is an undoubtable promising sign for the future of Optical LAN.”

Highlights from the Optical LAN Global Markets Report include:

Expected market contraction brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic was much milder than anticipated, followed by a more vigorous than predicted market recovery.

The Optical LAN market fragmentation has increased. Three years ago, the top three market segments accounted for 80 percent of total Optical LAN sales. Today the top three segments account for less than half of the market.

New standards allowing for the increased bandwidth and the development of Optical LAN Software Defined Networks are two key elements contributing to projections of rapid Optical LAN growth in the coming years.

While Optical LAN sales growth declined in Africa and Oceania in 2022, growth soared in Asia and significantly expanded in North, South and Central America.

The BSRIA Optical LAN Global Markets Report, commissioned by APOLAN, is the Optical LAN industry’s most accurate research report. It is conducted every two years to gather data from Optical LAN world leaders, including APOLAN members, manufacturers, distributors, integrators and consulting companies.

The report is available as a benefit of APOLAN membership or for purchase by nonmembers. APOLAN will host a BSRIA Optical LAN Global Markets Report webinar, presented by report author Martin Chiesa from BSRIA on May 24, 2023, to share highlights of the report’s findings.
