NEW YORK – Dec. 6, 2023 – APOLAN, the non-profit organization driving global adoption and evolution of optical networks, recently released a trio of projects demonstrating the sustainability benefits of optical local area network (OLAN) technology. 

The latest issue of ICT Today magazine features an article by longtime APOLAN leaders Gayla Arrindell, John Hoover and Jeff Van Horne focusing on building greener high-performance networks.  “How Optical LANs Can Support Sustainability in the Digital Era” addresses how commercial buildings can leverage optical LAN technology to build greener networks while meeting evolving technology requirements. 

“Many building professionals are looking to OLAN technology, including point-to-point and point-to-multipoint topologies, to help achieve ESG goals and reduce carbon emissions while lowering costs,” the article explains. “OLAN can reduce energy consumption, support efficient power delivery over greater distances, reduce space and material, and provide overall operational and capital savings in various environments, applications and deployments.”

APOLAN also recently presented the “Optical LAN, Smart Buildings & Internet of Things” webinar , now available on demand,  that explores how designs promoting fiber optic cabling can elevate the performance of smart buildings’ Internet of Things networks. Optical LANs can streamline operations for IT professionals, strengthen network security and exceed connectivity density and bandwidth demand. APOLAN and member companies AECOM, ITConnect Inc., Tellabs and Nokia will kick off the BICSI Fall Conference by presenting the Fundamentals of Optical LAN masterclass on Sept. 10-11, 2023. This educational seminar provides an overview of Optical LAN technology's value, architecture, design and powering considerations. The presentation focuses on system components, benefits, design methodologies, power survivability using AC and DC methods, planning and commissioning of electronics, infrastructure testing and closeout package deliverables. Attendees who complete the two-day seminar will receive nine BICSI Continuing Education Credits (CECs).

“Our latest report provides an external and independent view of the Optical LAN market and details its expansion in recent years,” said Martin Chiesa, BSRIA Senior Consultant. “We are witnessing growth coming from several market segments that previously were not as relevant as they are now. Highlights from the Optical LAN Global Markets Report include:

• Expected market contraction brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic was much milder than anticipated, followed by a more vigorous than predicted market recovery.
