The October/November/December 2025 issue of ICT Today, BICSI's trade journal, features an article examining the use of Optical LAN on cruise ships. Written by APOLAN Board Chair Karen Leos, "Unlocking Connectivity at Sea: How Passive Optical
LANs Revolutionize Cruise Ship Technology Deployments" discusses the unique technical challenges of cruise ships and how Optical LAN enables these floating cities to offer the same level of connectivity that passengers would expect at land-based hotels
and resorts.

BICSI members can view the full issue of ICT Today here (login required).

BICSI's Winter Conference will include an EduTour of Orlando International Airport Terminal C, which has deployed Optical LAN.

Orlando International Airport's South Terminal Complex (STC) is the first fully integrated, multi-modal airport terminal in the U.S. for rail-air-ground transportation. Terminal C opened to passengers in September of 2022 as one of the first LEED v4 certified airport campuses in the world, with a design that provides 25% energy cost-savings over the latest ASHRAE 90.1-2010 standard. The 1.3-million-sq-ft terminal incorporates many additional firsts for U.S. airports: technologies such as 100% total virtual ramp control; 100% advanced automated screening lanes; 100% facial recognition "e-gates;" a "Bags First" design and an RFID technology based 100% trackable baggage system.

Other opportunities to learn about Optical LAN at BICSI's Winter Conference include APOLAN's Fundamentals of Passive Optical LAN and Implementation & Use Cases of Optical LAN masterclasses on Feb. 2 and Feb 3, respectively.

BICSI Releases 15th Edition of TDMM for Cabling Design

BICSI, the global association leading the advancement of the information and communications technology (ICT) profession, released its updated 15th edition of the Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manual (TDMM) on Jan 25, 2024.

The TDMM was first published in 1985 and has become the recognized cornerstone of the ICT design industry. It is the basis for the Registered Communications Distribution Designer® (RCDD®) certification, a qualification integral to the design and implementation of reliable telecommunications distribution systems around the world. Today, the TDMM serves as an international resource in global ICT design leading practices.

The TDMM 15th edition builds on the two-time award-winning TDMM 14th edition by incorporating new information and updated content throughout its 2,000-plus pages spanning 22 chapters.

Some of the new information included in this edition covers single-pair ethernet cabling and connectors, discontinuous cable shields, 28 AWG patch cords, SC/APC type optical fiber connectors, optical fiber polarity, Class 4 fault managed power circuits, and various types of construction schedules. Additionally, it includes new and updated photos and color figures to better illustrate key points and concepts.

Content from the previous edition was also updated in the 15th edition to reflect current electromagnetic compatibility standards, intelligent building and data center standards and best practices, quality of service considerations in data network design, HVAC and fire suppression systems within ICT spaces, and the coordination required for rough-in cable installations. This latest edition also provides updated ICT designer roles during a project and much more.
